The concept behind SEC(Super Easy Chinese) App emerged from the long-term teaching experience of Chinese language educator 王肇昆(Wang Zhaokun), who gradually developed the SEC system's educational philosophy through years of classroom practice. Building on this foundation, his collaborator 屈朝虹(Qu Zhaohong) led the development of the SEC App, designed to enhance learners' experience and real-world language outcomes.

Years ago, Wang encountered an American student who studied Chinese diligently — attending formal language schools, mastering grammar rules, and building a strong vocabulary — yet still struggled to understand native speakers. In a conversation with him, Wang shared a method inspired by his own American teacher and refined through years of teaching: learn Chinese the way children learn their first language.

Infants don't study grammar or attend classes, yet they naturally acquire speech. Why? Because caregivers repeat phrases like "Call me Mom, call me Mom," and over time, the child learns to respond. Even parrots can mimic words after repeated exposure. The key, Wang explained, is listening.

He advised the student to shift from learning with his eyes to learning with his ears and mouth. Listening, he emphasized, is the foundation of fluent speaking. Through extensive listening, learners absorb vocabulary, internalize grammar, and progress more naturally. "Listen, listen more, and listen even more," he said. In his view, listening is the magic key to spoken Chinese mastery.

Wang believed that language learning should follow the natural sequence: listening first, then speaking, followed by reading and writing. Yet many learners do the opposite — starting with reading and writing, memorizing words, analyzing sentences, and drilling rules. Despite their effort, their speaking skills remain stagnant.

This realization revealed a flaw in traditional Chinese teaching: too many students were learning "silent Chinese", lacking the listening foundation essential for fluency. Determined to change this, Wang began developing a new system focused on spoken proficiency.

Over the years, he studied language pedagogy, tested new methods in real classrooms, and consulted with polyglots fluent in multiple languages. Through continuous refinement, his approach evolved into a powerful, evidence-based system.

To date, over 1,000 learners worldwide have benefited from this method, consistently describing it as the most intuitive and effective way to improve spoken Chinese.

Research shows the fact that students really don't like textbooks; they are boring and completely waste your time. If you focus on textbooks or grammar rules, it will hurt your speaking. For example, a teacher teaches students conversations. The teacher says: "repeat after me, class: '你好, 你好吗?' (hello! how are you?)" — the teacher often asks the class to look at the text at the same time. And the class together, looking at the text, everybody says: "你好, 你好吗? (hello! how are you?)". Then, the teacher says "我很好, 你呢? (I'm fine, and you?)" Then, all of the class together says, "我很好, 你呢? (I'm fine, and you?)". This is just Read-And-Repeat and Listen-And-Repeat, not Listen-And-Understand and Blurt Out. And unfortunately, this is just slow Classroom Sound, not real Native Sound! It's an old way used in the past. It's boring and not powerful.

The SEC App features specially designed Mini Stories using the Listen-And-Answer method. These are a unique type of story where the instructor "asks" a story rather than "tells" it. The instructor poses numerous simple and easy questions throughout the narrative. Why this approach? Because learners must answer questions constantly, engaging in continuous active response. Here is a simple example of a Question-And-Answer Mini Story with just a couple of sentences. Imagine a short story: In the traditional method, the teacher would say "repeat after me," and then state: "有一个男孩, 他要去商店买东西" (There is a boy, he is going to the store to buy something). Students would then repeat the sentence: "有一个男孩, 他要去商店买东西".

However, in Question-And-Answer stories, the instructor asks many questions — very easy ones. The SEC App uses easy questions to eliminate the need for conscious thinking. If a difficult question were posed, learners might pause to think, but with very easy questions, learners can immediately respond with one or two words. For example, the instructor would say: "有一个男孩, 有一个男孩是吗?" (There is a boy, is there a boy?) And learners respond "是, 是的" (yes — answering in Chinese). Then the instructor says "有一个男孩还是女孩呢?" (Is there a boy or girl?) Learners immediately, instantly respond "男孩, 男孩" (a boy). The instructor continues "噢, 是的, 他的名字叫James" (Um, yes, he is James), then asks "James是男孩还是女孩呢?" (Is James a boy or a girl?) Learners respond "男孩, 男孩" (a boy). The instructor then continues to ask more questions. Through constantly answering Super Easy questions, learners develop the ability to think in Chinese and respond quickly in Chinese.

The SEC App also includes Magic Stories, which utilize the most common basic vocabulary in Chinese while cleverly employing word expansion within sentences. What makes these stories special? The app presents the same story multiple times while varying the Chinese sentence structure. The meaning remains consistent, but learners experience the story through different linguistic patterns. Learners don't need to know grammar rules. Simply by listening to the Magic Stories, Chinese grammar improves automatically!

Here is a simple example: In SEC's Magic Stories approach, learners begin with a short, funny story. Initially, they hear a basic version without modifiers — no adjectives, limited subjects, etc. They listen to it daily. For example: 有一个男孩！which means "a boy." Then, learners hear the exact same story, but this time with several words added. An adjective might be included in the story. For example: 有一个聪明的男孩！which means "a clever boy!"

Next, learners receive the exact same story again, but with additional words introduced. For example: 爸爸有一个聪明的男孩！which means "father has a clever boy!"

Through this progression, learners naturally understand the changes without conscious analysis. The only requirement is listening. By progressing through story one, story two, and story three, grammar is absorbed unconsciously — just like a native speaker, just like a child. When grammar is learned this way through these types of stories, it becomes deeply internalized. Learners develop automatic, quick grammar usage. Understanding becomes instant, quick, and automatic. There's no need to think about rules or even know them explicitly.
